How to: Spot Trends

Congratulations to us!  Our campaign was written up by Osocio!  What is Osocio.org, you may ask?  It is the place where activism and advertising collide, a website that specializes in social advertising and non-profit campaigns.  We are especially delighted because – in our opinion – Osocio is the most energetic, intelligent, and big-hearted website of its kind in the world.

Moreover, ours is a vaguely informed opinion.  Here are some of the other, lesser, but nonetheless wonderful PR/advertising/social media/tech sites that we frequent:

http://techcrunch.com/ Tech Crunch is an insider’s guide to social media and technology.  It features detailed reporting on Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft, and Google – among many other nerdy and esoteric hot topics.  It feels less like a blog than a news wire.  New posts come quickly throughout the day.

http://springwise.com/ Springwise is an assiduous industry-watcher.  With a network of 8,000 “spotters,” it obsessively forages the web, industry press, and company press releases for new business ideas.  Its range of interests can be overwhelming.  But the site is relatively easy to navigate.  Currently on its front page is an article alerting the world to the existence of “Box Holidays,” or “tangible, pre-packaged travel offerings that can be purchased online or off the shelf.”  The Box Holidays’ packaging bears a striking resemblance to that of videogames or Microsoft Office.

http://mashable.com/ Mashable is an excellent source of news about social media.  For instance, today it informs us that Facebook is going to introduce face-recognition software, obviating the need to tag your friends in photos.  “Tag Suggestions” is set to roll out next week for American users.  Get excited!  Or be afraid.

http://www.adverblog.com/ Adverblog is a giddy inventory of PR news, advertising, photos, videos, and marketing analysis.  The blog was founded by Martina Zavagno, an interactive marketer who works for a premium sports brand, in 2003.  Because this blog is the work of one woman, as opposed to a professional endeavour, its coverage is necessarily narrower than Tech Crunch’s or Mashable’s.  But Zavango’s eye for fresh advertising campaigns is impeccable.  It is easy to get lost in her world for hours at a time, whether you are a Luddite or a ranking member of the technocrati.  10/10.

http://www.geekologie.com/ Geekologie is Adverblog’s less tasteful doppelganger.  Still, it provides engaging news about games, gizmos, and gadgets.  For instance:

“When it comes to restrooms, there’s really only one game I like to play: pee on the floor for as long as possible before somebody else comes in. I used to play pecker peeker too but I got punched in the eye recently (dude didn’t even wash his hand first!) so I’m laying low on that one for a bit. It’s always the small ones that get angry aside, SEGA’s rolling out a line of urine stream-controlled video games (which aren’t a new concept) to encourage men to aim for the urinal and not the fly on the wall.”
